Starting a new job soon...need advice?

I am starting a new job soon, been off for over and year so I am really nervous and anxious to begin a new job and meet new people. Any advice to help me deal with this stress and worries about my first day of work? Help!Starting a new job soon...need advice?
Hey Eye: Just be flexible. You are going to be spending much of your first week filling out paperwork, and getting to know the lay of the land. Don't get involved in a lot of he said/she said. Don't form alliances or 'war parties' on your first weeks there. And, by all means, don't become part of the 'office romance' scene.

What you could do is find out what other areas of the company you could work in, down the road. Just keep your eye, for now, on your present job...but always look ahead.

Great books: 'Smart Moves' or 'Smart Moves' for People in Charge. Both by Sussman and Deep. Also, you might brush up on the market by checking out the various business magazines on line; Inc., Black Enterprise, and Fortune. Plus, the Wall Street Journal.

Congrats! I KNOW its a jungle out there!

Lastly; if you know your Bible--'Be Anxious For Nothing'....I'm sure that you'll be able to remember the rest!!!Starting a new job soon...need advice?
be calm and easy, don't try too hard. Be frank, don't be pretentious when you meet your coworkers. Don't be presumptuous about anything, don't assume anything. Make sure you find out from you managers about your role and job description\requirements. Try understand the political environment there, each place has its own politics. Don't assume that the systems and ways of doing things in the new company will be the same as the ones in the old.

Try to have fun, and don't take anything too seriously, give your self the time to acclimatize to the new environment.

also beware of people who ask personal\probing questions. Don't be too friendly, people may take advantage of you. Don't assume that everyone is good or that everyone is looking out for yout best intentions etc.

Don't make assumptions if you are not sure about something, ask questions.
When you meet your new co-workers, introduce yourself and give a firm handshake, don't be afraid to ask questions, and if you are familiar with the job never say ';I know'; find a different choice of words. Be polite and courteous. Don't stand around always ask if you can help.

That's all I can think of!

Good Luck!

Best advice. . . Get a nice professional looking journal and a good pen to TAKE NOTES! This is the most important thing you can do when starting a new job. People doing orientation or showing you around will rattle all kinds of stuff off and if you don't write it down, you'll forget it. Trying to remember everything everyone tells you will just make you more nervous. Now, don't be so busy taking notes that you bump into people or forget to look up - lol. Just keep it handy so that if someone give you instructions or information you'll need later, you can jot it down. Believe me, your employers will be relieved that you are taking the initiative in being prepared and you're confidence will be so much greater on day #2 when you don't have to ask a bunch of questions and can work more independently because you have taken notes.
Smile and say hello to everyone. Don't get into your personal life to much because you don't know how much is being asked to be friendly or to use against you some day. Remember you do not know these people yet. Try to be friendly and listen to what ever you might hear but don't repeat it. Good Luck
